Tiivistelmä suomeksi / Summary in Finnish: Sivu esittelee itävaltalaisten museoiden sosiaaliseen mediaan liittyviä toimintoja.

Main questions:

  1. How do museums in Austria use social media tools?
  2. Which social media applications, tools, etc. do they use?

To answer these questions I focused on better known museums in Vienna. The museums I chose to be the representative examples of my research are the following:

  • Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien (Art Museum)
  • Albertina Museum (Art Museum)
  • Schloss Schönbrunn
  • Schloss Belvedere/Belvedere Museum


Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien

  • Blog, Twitter, Youtube, Google, Facebook, Kunstkammer-App


Albertina

  • Blog, Googleartproject, Tripadvisor, Vimeo
  • Offer a virtual tour of the museum, which you can like and add/share within facebook, twitter, google+, linkedin).


Schönbrunn

  • Share button for over 336 different tools and applications.
  • Link to Trivago, Tripadvisor, Qype, Twitter, Youtube
  • On Youtube they promote for an app called "Sisi & Franzl yourself". It is an facebook application to acquire new fans for Schönbrunn's facebook page.


Belvedere

  • Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Flickr
  • Share button


Trivago, Tripadvisor and Qype

These are web pages where somone interested in a certain place can find reviews and advices from people who visited the place. As a user you can rate a place and leave comments.
Tripadvisor is also connected with Facebook and the pictures shown on the web page are from the visitors who shared their pictures.

Lindedin

Website for preofessional networking - used for business interaction and communication and to gain new and maintain current business relationships.

Googleartproject

Collection of pictures of museum pieces. When creating an account, you can create your own gallery with the pieces you like from different places.

Conclusion

All of them use Facebook. Mostly to keep their visitors updated about news, upcoming evnts, opening hours, maintenance works and to show pictures and videos (regarding the museum in general, not of the museum pieces). Most important tool - like button! They use the applications in my opinion mainly as a marketing tool to reach more people. If there is some kind of interaction on the different sites the institutions do not really respond to that.

Some other larger museums (not listed here) in Vienna just use facebook. My personell impression, why these institutions are, for me surprisingly, open to social media tools and application is, because they are more attractiv for tourists. These institutions listed here are especially presenting Austrian culture and history.
